Certification is the procedure that certifies the conformity of the translated text to the original text. It is required in all cases where official statement from the translator regarding the correspondence between the translated text and the original text is necessary.
The sworn or certified translation is an authenticated translation rendered official by an affidavit signed by the professional translator.
The affidavit is attached to the translation, stamped, validated and registered by the Public Official (Clerk of the court) at the Clerk’s office of the competent court, or by a Notary, or at the Consulate of the country of destination of the translated document.
As a deed produced by a judicial body, a sworn translation has legal value. Sworn translations are usually required for legal and corporate documents, notarial acts, registry office certificates and certificates of previous convictions, school diplomas and academic titles in order to certify their conformity to the original document.
The deed consists of three parts: the original document, the translation of the document and the affidavit signed by the Clerk or the Notary along with the translator, stamped and stapled together to form a single file. In some countries, such as the Russian Federation, a free translation of the affidavit is also required. The stamp from the Court Clerk's office, or the Notary's stamp, or the translator's signature is affixed along the line of connection between the pages on every page that is part of the file. For this reason, if even a single page is separated from the other pages that are part of the file, the sworn translation loses its legal value.
