Negotiation interpreting or dialogue interpreting is particularly suitable for events in which the parties need to broach topics with specific content, therefore it is widely used in commercial and financial fields, where work meetings, business negotiations, B2B meetings, contract signing, bilateral meetings, trade fairs, visits to plants and companies, and accompanying of Italian delegations abroad as well as accompanying of foreign delegations in Italy frequently occur. It is also in high demand in the medical, health-care, legal and tourism fields, during sport events, and generally in any situation where there are two interlocutors who speak different languages and need an interpreter to communicate.
In this mode, the interpreter facilitates communication during events with a limited number of participants, which do not require the use of consecutive interpretation techniques (prise de notes).
Negotiation interpreting is also defined as “dialogic” because it is commonly used in a situation of dialogue between two people who do not speak the same language but need to communicate: each speaker speaks for only a few minutes and the interpreter translates what the speaker has said for the benefit of the other speaker, who then takes their turn to speak. Thus, speaker, interpreter and speaker alternate in a sort of mediated dialogue, from which the term “dialogue interpreting” is derived.
Like the consecutive interpreter, the negotiation interpreter must also be prepared to grasp and convey shades of meaning, tones of voice and frames of mind, as well as to know immediately whether the parties involved aim at a specific objective or prefer a particular solution, thereby acting as a mediator and actively contributing to the success of the event.
